Company Background
S&N Theatre (Stuff and Nonsense) is a spirited production company making inspiring theatre for bold adventurers. We work with children, families, artists & theatres across the UK to make excellent contemporary theatre for family audiences.
We are passionate about children’s creativity & place it at the heart of what we do, working with incredible artists to make outstanding theatre that excites children & enables adults to become seriously playful.
Since 2010 we have toured over 2,200 live performances to more than 320,000 people and generated £2.5 million in box office income.
Based at The Lyric Theatre, Bridport, S&N is one of four @HOME Associate Artists at The Point, Eastleigh and has significant producing partnerships with Theatre Royal Plymouth and The Lighthouse, Poole.
We became a charity in 2019 and work closely with our board of trustees, chaired by Thomas Fowler (Dorset CC Children’s Services). Our patron is Chris Chibnall (Dr Who, Broadchurch and Torchwood).
We have a strong track record of securing funding support from a variety of sources including public funds through Arts Council England, Garfield Weston, Ragdoll Foundation and the Foyle Foundation.
Niki McCretton, Artistic Director uses a devising process based on play and improvisation.
Her background is theatre, circus, choreography and working with the minds of brilliantly creative children, who offer abstract and strange ideas to the creative exploration. Niki is our permanent director who also directs for other companies, working with comedy, outdoor arts, solo performance, circus companies and puppetry.
As a company we are committed to supporting artists. We work with artists who have big families, young children, disability and those who identify as different. We work to find ways to make our working lives wonderful and to find joy in the work and in each other. We believe in kindness, respect, friendship and community. We work as a small but strong team and with great energy. We are seriously playful and push ourselves to grow. We are serious in our intention to create the best theatre – it is not dumbed down for children; it is challenging and no different than creating work for ourselves as adults.
